Introduction
Let’s be honest; every change tends to make us all distressed. And Instagram updates for 2025 are no exception. The new features have left users fuming, creators scrambling, and marketers scratching their heads.
Although this change may not be as drastic as Jaguar’s rebranding, it has angered and annoyed many people.
But really, what is going on, and why does Instagram seem to be fixing something that wasn’t broken? Let’s examine the situation.
Instagram 2025 Updates - what changed?
1. Vertical Profile Grid
The classic 1×1 square design has been replaced by a rectangular one. Oh yes, that’s right, even the beautiful, organized pictures you created have all been thrown out of sync. It’s like Picasso walked into the Louvre and messed with paintings just for fun. The reason? Instagram claims this layout is optimized for mobile devices, allowing users to scroll more effectively. But does it really? Instagram’s new vertical post size is 1080x1350px. However, we recommend keeping all critical elements within the old 1080x1080px square “safe zone” because Instagram could revert to its square feed format at any time, breaking your feed again.
Can you revert your Instagram profile to the square grid? No, you can only adjust the preview for now. Open a post, click the three dots in the upper-right corner, and select Adjust preview.
2. The AI-Curated Feed Shuffle
Instagram now shuffles your posts in a particular order that ensures relevancy to the viewer but not to the creator. Do you know that carefully crafted arrangement of pictures you so desperately sought after? Great, they are gone now.
3. The Filter Exodus
Instagram is saying goodbye to some of its iconic filters, due to going towards authenticity without AI. With this, they are pushing creators to embrace raw, unedited aesthetics. Even though most of the deleted filters were not “beauty” ones, in their words, this change reflects a growing cultural demand for transparency and realism. But let’s face it—not everyone wants their Monday morning selfie to scream “natural.” Now that all users’ saved filters are gone, they are left to depend on Meta’s default filters or third-party apps. Calls for petitions to bring back the filters are all over the internet.
4. Vanishing Captions
Captions now require a tap to expand. The logic here is less storytelling and more images. While the company has argued that this principle keeps feeds cleaner, it, however, shatters the words painstakingly crafted by the creators.
5. Profile Highlights Overhaul
Instagram has completely overhauled the previous format in which your profile would show your Highlights. Instead of displaying in a grid format, they now appear in a whole different tab that is bigger and more appealing to the eye. This is to make the saved Stories way more attractive and facilitate better curation. Unfortunately, they will now appear in a much bigger design, and unless you watch it very carefully, it can easily disrupt your aesthetic harmony.
6. Removal of Hashtag Following
Instagram has removed the option to follow hashtags, leaving users scratching their heads. While Instagram insists this will improve relevance, it also strips away a key tool for curating content around specific interests. Hashtag-following is now history, and I don’t think we are ready for this shift.
How are users reacting?
The backlash has been pretty immediate and roared as loud as a hurt lion in the jungle, with hashtags like #BringBackTheGrid across social. Here are some of the comments from the users:
Such feelings typify a more widespread discontent with the platform’s direction as users adjust to losing control over their own aesthetics.
Why did Instagram do this?
Instagram defends updates as necessary improvements for a more immersive and engaging experience. In other words, it is chasing trends and trying to retain users in an increasingly competitive social media landscape.
Off the record, this doesn’t seem like innovation; it looks more like a failed attempt to imitate TikTok, and here comes the bitter news: they could have made a big score for themselves. Where there’s a wide-open possibility for siphoning viewers and creators brought up in the ban, American people found themselves disappointed.
America’s content creators feel particularly betrayed by the TikTok shutdown (as stated on January 20th, TikTok will be back), pointing out that this was Instagram’s moment to shine as a stable, creator-friendly platform – but instead, they’ve opted for chaos.
Instagram seems so focused on staying “relevant” that it has lost touch with its core identity. Doing so alienates the users who built its success.
What does this mean for Instagram creators?
Creators, you’ve got some recalibrating to do. Here’s how to adapt:
1. Reimagine Visual Storytelling – the vertical grid requires a new angle. Think on a level with vertical lines that flow into one another rather than isolated squares. Use this format of fresh storytelling to your benefit. Also, as we said before, to be extra safe, keep all your critical design elements in the old square safe zone; if Instagram decides to return to the old grid system, your feed won’t break again.
2. Prioritize Reels – the algorithm still favors video content. Double down on Reels and experiment with trends to stay visible.
3. Get Strategic with Captions – the captions have become less important; let the visuals do the heavy lifting. Use overlay text across the image and perhaps across video content so that core messages are not compromised by missing the viewing.
4. Test and Adapt – Monitor engagement metrics closely as users adjust to the updates. What has worked up to now may not have the same effect today. Here, agility is key.
Can Instagram win back trust?
Trust isn’t built overnight; it’s earned, and Instagram’s latest changes have put that trust to the test. Users are left wondering: does the platform still remember who it’s here for? Not long ago, Instagram used to be a mutual benefit platform: creators told their stories, and audiences connected without obstacles. But by chasing fleeting trends, Instagram risks becoming just another app in the sea of competition.
The answer? Listen to the users; they will lead you! They don’t need gimmicks upon gimmicks. What they need is a platform that understands their needs and makes room for creativity.
So, Instagram, take note. Reinventing the wheel is one thing, but turning it into a square? A tough sell.
Final thoughts
So, can Instagram again regain its name and reputation? Sure, it can, by simply asking users what they want. Imagine giving them the option to switch back to a regular grid or refine the algorithm to their preferences. These are not updates; these are trust-building opportunities.
But here’s the hard question: will Instagram actually admit its mistakes? Here is something that every brand should remember: do not chase every trend that is out, but implement ones that are true to their brand strategy and their users.
